Faheem Hasnain
Chairman of the Board
Mr. Hasnain has served as one of our directors since October 2010, and as the chairman of the board since November 2010. He is currently president and chief executive officer of Receptos, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company developing G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) therapeutic candidates through information-driven drug discovery. Prior to joining Receptos, he was president and chief executive officer of Facet Biotech, a biology driven antibody company with focus in Oncology and MS. In April 2010, Facet was acquired by Abbott Laboratories for $722 million. Mr. Hasnain joined Facet’s predecessor company, PDL Biopharma as president and chief executive officer in 2008 with the express purpose to spin-out Facet as a separate public biotech operation. He also served at Biogen Idec from 2004 to 2008 in the capacity of executive vice president of the Oncology/Rheumatology Strategic Business Unit. Prior to Biogen Idec, He held positions with Bristol-Myers Squibb, where he was president of their Oncology Therapeutics Network, and for 14 years at GlaxoSmithKline and its predecessor organizations. In this period, he pioneered and led GSK’s Global eBusiness capability and also held roles spanning international commercial operations, general management, sales, marketing and policy. Mr. Hasnain has served as a member of the board of directors of Tercica Inc. and currently also serves as chairman of the board of Sente Inc., and is a director for Somaxon Pharmaceuticals. He received a B.H.K. and B.Ed from the University of Windsor in Canada.
Steven A. Elms
Director
Mr. Elms has served as one of our directors since 2001 and as the chairman of the board from July 2005 to November 2009. He is a managing director of the Perseus-Soros Biopharmaceutical Fund (PSBF) and managing partner of Aisling Capital LLC, both venture capital firms. He joined PSBF in 2000 from the Life Sciences Investment Banking Group of Chase H&Q (formerly Hambrecht and Quist) where he was a principal. Prior to Hambrecht and Quist, Mr. Elms traded mortgage-backed securities at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. His previous healthcare sector experience includes over two years as a pharmaceutical sales representative for Marion Laboratories and two years as a consultant for the Wilkerson Group. Mr. Elms has served on the board of directors of MAP Pharmaceuticals, Inc. since June 2004 and is a director of a number of private companies. He holds a B.A. in human biology from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from the Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.
Standish M. Fleming
Director
Mr. Fleming has served as one of our directors since June 2001. He is a managing member at Forward Ventures, a venture capital firm which he co-founded in 1993. Before establishing Forward Ventures, he served as the chairman, president and chief executive officer of GeneSys Therapeutics, Inc. (merged with Somatix and subsequently acquired by Cell GeneSys, Inc.). In his capacity as a founding managing member of Forward Ventures, Mr. Fleming has served on the board of directors and as the initial president and chief executive officer of numerous pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Mr. Fleming served on the board of directors of Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. from December 2004 to September 2006. Mr. Fleming earned his B.A. from Amherst College and his M.B.A. from the UCLA Graduate School of Management.
Michael A. Martino
President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Martino joined Ambit as President and Chief Executive Officer in November 2011, bringing a nearly 30-year track record in leading privately held and publicly traded life sciences companies through late-stage clinical development, fundraising, commercial and business development activities, including new product launches and mergers and acquisitions. From 1999 to 2008, Mr. Martino served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Sonus Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a publicly traded cancer therapeutics company. During his tenure, he refocused the company on oncology drug development, and oversaw development of the company’s lead cancer therapeutic through a pivotal Phase 3 trial conducted under a special protocol assessment. In addition, he played an integral role in establishing and managing collaborations with partners, raising capital from public markets and completing a reverse merger with Oncogenex Pharmaceuticals, Inc. In 2009-10, Mr. Martino was President and Chief Executive Officer of Arzeda Corp., a privately held company based on enzyme design and development technology licensed from the University of Washington. In 2010 until joining Ambit, Mr. Martino held multiple positions with CareFusion Corporation, including Senior Vice President and General Manager of Diagnostics and Senior Vice President of Innovation, Business Development and Strategy. Earlier in his career, he held multiple positions during a 17-year tenure at Mallinckrodt in strategic planning, business development, marketing and general management. Mr. Martino received an M.B.A. from Virginia Tech and a bachelor’s degree from Roanoke College. He currently serves on the board of directors of Ambit and Arzeda Corp.
Allan P. Marchington, Ph.D.
Director
Dr. Marchington has served as one of our directors since October 2007. He is a partner at Apposite Capital LLP, a venture capital firm, a position he has held since April 2006. From July 2003 to August 2005, he served as an entrepreneur in residence at Abingworth Management, a venture capital firm. From July 2000 to July 2003, he served as senior vice president at Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and as chairman of its European subsidiary, Millennium Pharmaceuticals Ltd. Prior to Millennium, he was principal founder and chief executive officer of Cambridge Combinatorial Chemistry, a biotech company which he founded in 1997 and successfully sold to Millennium Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in 2000. Before setting up Cambridge Combinatorial Chemistry, Dr. Marchington worked for seven years in a range of therapeutic areas at Pfizer, Inc. He earned his Ph.D. and B.Sc. in chemistry from the University of Liverpool, UK.
Isai Peimer
Director
Mr. Peimer has been one of our directors since September 2010. He is a Principal at MedImmune Ventures. He worked as a venture capitalist at Visium Asset Management, a large healthcare focused fund based in New York. Previously, he worked as an investment banker at J.P. Morgan and as a Specialty Pharmaceuticals analyst at Alliance Bernstein. Prior to Wall Street, Isai was a management consultant and focused on corporate strategy for the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors. Isai's career began at Merck & Co., Inc. He is a graduate of Emory University where he earned a B.S. in Chemistry summa cum laude, and earned his M.B.A. from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth.
Joseph Regan
Director
Mr. Regan has served as one of our directors since August 2009. He is vice president of investments at GrowthWorks Capital, Inc., a venture capital firm, a position he has held since 2003. He has served a wide range of roles within the firm’s portfolio companies, including gestational chief executive officer. Additionally he currently serves as president of an early stage seed fund and serves on the board of directors of numerous private companies. He earned an Honours B.Sc. from the University of Guelph (Distinction) and an M.B.A. from McMaster University.
Saiid Zarrabian
Director
Mr. Zarrabian has served as one of our directors since May 2009. He is currently president, chief executive officer and member of the board of directors of Cyntellect, Inc., an instrumentation company whose products support key applications to advance life science research, biopharmaceutical production, stem cell research and drug discovery, a position he has held since March 2010. He is also a member of the board of eMolecules, Inc., a data content and e-commerce provider of online search and acquisition of screening and building blocks for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry. He also serves as principal of Zarrabian Consulting, a company which he founded in 2002 to provide executive consulting services to pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. He recently served as a member of the board of Penwest Pharmaceuticals Co., which was acquired by Endo Pharmaceuticals in September 2010. From May 2001 to January 2002, Mr. Zarrabian served as president and chief operating officer of Senomyx, Inc., a biotechnology firm involved with the discovery of novel flavor ingredients. Before this, Mr. Zarrabian served as chief operating officer of Pharmacopeia, Inc. (later acquired by Ligand Pharmaceuticals Incorporated), a publicly-held biotechnology firm engaged in internal drug discovery, combinatorial chemistry, and high throughput screening products and services, and as president and chief operating officer of Molecular Simulations, Inc. (acquired by Pharmacopeia, Inc.).
