Michael A. Martino
President and Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Martino has served as president and chief executive officer of Ambit since November 2011. From March 2010 until November 2011, Mr. Martino held multiple positions with CareFusion Corporation, a publicly-traded healthcare company, including senior vice president and general manager of diagnostics and senior vice president of innovation, business development and strategy. From January 2009 to March 2010, Mr. Martino was president and chief executive officer of Arzeda Corp., a privately-held enzyme design and development company that he co-founded, and he remains on the board of directors. From September 1998 to August 2008, Mr. Martino served as president and chief executive officer of Sonus Pharmaceuticals a publicly-traded pharmaceutical development company that merged with Oncogenex Pharmaceuticals in August 2008. Earlier in his career, he held multiple positions during a 17-year tenure at Mallinckrodt, Inc., in strategic planning, business development, marketing and general management. Mr. Martino received an M.B.A. from Virginia Tech and a B.A. from Roanoke College.
Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Fuhrman has served as chief financial officer of Ambit since October 2010. From November 2008 to September 2010, Mr. Fuhrman served as vice president and chief financial officer of Naviscan, Inc., a privately-held medical imaging company focused on the management of breast cancer. From September 2004 through August 2008, he served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Sonus Pharmaceuticals, a publicly-traded pharmaceutical development company that merged with Oncogenex Pharmaceuticals in August 2008. Mr. Fuhrman served as president and chief operating officer of Integrex, Inc., a manufacturing services company, from April 2002 until its acquisition in July 2004. From February 1999 until March 2002, he was the chief financial officer at Capital Stream, Inc., a financial services workflow automation company. Mr. Fuhrman received B.S. degrees in both business administration and agricultural economics from Montana State University. Mr. Fuhrman received his Certified Public Accountant Certification from the State of Oregon; however, currently he is not an active CPA.
Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Countouriotis has served as chief medical officer of Ambit since February 2012. From August 2007 to February 2012, Dr. Countouriotis was a clinical leader within the Pfizer Inc. Oncology Business Unit. From October 2005 to August 2007, she was director of oncology global clinical research at Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, a publicly-traded global pharmaceutical company, with responsibility for leading clinical development of Sprycel® in acute lymphoblastic leukemia and chronic myeloid leukemia. Earlier in her career, she held the position as associate medical director at Cell Therapeutics, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company. Dr. Countouriotis received a B.S. from the University of California, Los Angeles, and an M.D. at Tufts University School of Medicine. She received her initial training in pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles, and additional training at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in the Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology Program.
Senior Vice President and General Counsel
Ms. North joined Ambit in June 2013 and currently serves as Senior Vice President and General Counsel. Ms. North has provided legal consulting services to life sciences companies in San Diego and the Bay Area since 2009, including Intellikine, Wellspring Biosciences, Aragon Pharmaceuticals and Lumena Pharmaceuticals. From 2000 to 2008, Ms. North served as General Counsel and held a number of other positions at SGX Pharmaceuticals (SGXP; acquired by Eli Lilly and Company in 2008). Prior to SGX, Ms. North was Senior Director of Operations and Legal at Axys Pharmaceuticals, and Director of Legal Affairs at Sequana Therapeutics. Before moving to the United States in 1994, she practiced commercial litigation at Nabarro Nathanson in London, England, and at Corrs, Chambers, Westgarth, in Melbourne, Australia. Ms. North is a member of the State Bar of California, a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales, and a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria, Australia. She received both her Bachelor of Commerce and her Bachelor of Laws from the University of Melbourne, Australia.
Senior Vice President, Corporate Planning & Development
Mr. Orlando joined Ambit in September 2013 as Senior Vice President, Corporate Planning & Development. Mr. Orlando brings more than 30 years of commercial development experience in the Biopharmaceutical Industry. Most recently, from November 2012 to September 2013, Mr. Orlando was engaged as a biopharmaceutical consultant with a focus on commercial readiness strategies. From December 2010 to November 2012, Mr. Orlando held the position of Senior Vice President of Commercial Development, at Zalicus which included responsibility for Business Development. From July 2007 to December 2009 Mr. Orlando, served as Vice President, Marketing at Neuromed Pharmaceuticals where he established and led a commercialization initiative utilizing an innovative out-sourced resource model. From October 2005 to July 2007, Mr. Orlando held the position of Executive Director, Transplant Marketing at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals. Earlier in his career, Mr. Orlando held several senior commercial development roles in the USA, Canada and Europe with established firms including Genentech, GSK, and Eli Lilly. Mr. Orlando received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from the University of Western Ontario, London, Canada.
Senior Vice President, Human Resources & Organizational Development
Ms. Pagano joined Ambit in September 2013, as Senior Vice President overseeing human resources and organizational development. Prior to her work with Ambit Biosciences and as Principal at TotalVision Training, Ms. Pagano served as Chief of Operations for Pettit Kohn Ingrassia & Lutz. Ms. Pagano has also held the positions of Senior VP Human Resources for Kisco Senior Living, 1st Vice President for Imperial Capital Bank, and Vice President, Human Resources for The Source. Ms. Pagano has a bachelor of science degree in Labor Relations from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. She is a member of the Society for Human Resource Management and National Human Resources Association and has received several performance awards, including 2012 Finalist for The Women Who Mean Business Awards and Top 40 Under 40. The organizations she has led have frequently been selected for recognition in the SHRM Workplace Excellence program, Top 100 Fastest Growing Companies in San Diego, as well as the Union Tribune’s Top Workplace awards.
